Denim Charlotte Skirt

Hello sewers! Long time no post. I was away from my sewing machine for a month in Paris. Which was wonderful, but I definitely got out of the sewing habit and since coming back I've been unsure about which UFOs to tackle, or whether to start something new. So I eased myself back in by resurrecting this half-finished By Hand London Charlotte skirt.

I've made this pattern up twice before, but for one reason and another went off both those skirts very quickly, and they've gone off to charity. I had quite a lot of fitting issues with this one, and in the end got fed up and added belt loops and called it a day! I took a wedge of about 1cm out of the centre back seam, and I feel the back and sides fit well now... it's the front that's still bothering me!

Can you see the fabric bunching up between and just under the sets of darts? I just have no idea how to fix this. I tried lengthening the darts by 2cm, but that made no difference, just moved the baggy area downwards, so I brought them back to where they were. I'm not sure where to look for information about this problem!

Still, it's a comfy skirt with a belt, and the Goldhawk Road stretch denim makes it easy to wear. So I'll wear it out and about and see if the bagginess at the front bugs me or not! It's bugging me right now!!

Until soon!

  1. Hi there! I have the same fit issue in the front of pencil skirts. I suspect that I need more room in the hips. Would love to hear more if you figure it out.

  2. Could you pinch out the excess from the flat piece? I suspect you need more room in the hip too X

    1. Hi Amy! I read about doing that, but I'm not sure how one then applies the pinch out back to the flat pattern? It's a puzzler to me!

  3. This is really common in this pattern. Gail at Today's Agenda worked out one adjustment that helped.... Happened in mine too!

  4. A new development. You inspired me to try to figure this out in a skirt I'm making and oddly enough, I think I did so by shortening my front darts. Hope this helps!

    1. Isn't that weird!!! Although, I've just returned to an old New Look 6003 which has no front darts and hasn't got that problem at all, so I'm thinking of fudging the two together - I do really like the high waist and shape of Charlotte apart from this problem! Which skirt are you making? Thanks for sharing the info!

  5. Sorry for the late response, I just saw this. Another data point: I also have the pleated pencil skirt from Delia Creates and the front is perfect. It's very high waisted but I have no gaping under the belly and no drag lines. When I get home tonight I'll compare my pattern pieces and see if I spot anything obvious.

If you want to email me, perhaps send me a DM on instagram. I'm at StoneArch_Stitcher on insta.
